Prior to 1948, in the UK there were FOUR principal railway companies: The Great Western, The London– Midland – Scottish, The London North Eastern and of course The Southern. These companies were formed in 1923 but prior to this there were many privately owned companies, they were known collectively as “PRE-GROUPING” . 1948 saw great changes in the rail network of Britain. The Big FOUR as they were affectionately referred to, became nationalised and the newly formed and named, BRITISH RAILWAYS was born.
Since the days of Dr. Beeching and Barbara Castle, who decimated the network by massive closures and cutbacks (mid-1960’s) British Railways has now returned to something not so dissimilar to the days of the Private Companies prior to their becoming grouped in the Big Four.
The whole concept of the model railways hobby is one of creativity and pleasure. From the humble beginnings of the Christmas or birthday present train set upto pedantic modelling in various scales and gauges from 2m/m:1foot to 1inch:1foot and even larger.
